Republican Kevin Shutty announced Wednesday he is running for the Mason County Board of Commissioners from District 2.

“I'm running for commissioner because I believe with the right leadership we can revitalize our economy, strengthen public safety and empower our residents to meet the needs of our community,” Shutty said. “I am proud to call Mason County home, and I am committed to being a full-time advocate for the people of our community. The time has come for us to make Mason County a leader regionally and a competitor across Washington.”

Kevin Shutty announced he is running for the Mason County Board of Commissioners from District 2. Shutty lives in Union with his wife Catherine and serves as a member of the Mason County Planning Advisory Commission.

Shutty also said he will address issues including jobs and the economy, affordable housing, public safety and open, transparent government.

“I have heard time and again from people in our community concerned about job losses and the lack of available housing. I believe we must encourage a diverse economy that meets the needs of working families across the county. This begins with respecting our rural character, encouraging sensible development and addressing issues within county government that are barriers to growth. As commissioner, I will work every day to secure a bright future for Mason County,” Shutty said.

Shutty has spent the past five years working on local and regional issues as a volunteer and in the Legislature, and served on the staff of state representative Drew MacEwen. Additionally, he served as vice chair of the North Mason Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee, and has volunteered with the North Mason Coalition of Churches food program. He and Catherine are active members of Prince of Peace Church in Belfair.

Shutty holds a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education and is completing a Master’s in community and economic development, both from Penn State University.

Union Republican announces run for Mason commissioner District 2

With the official candidate filing week closed, Kevin Shutty is focused on moving Mason County forward as the August 2 primary approaches. The race will determine who represents District 2 on the county commission.

“I have met with residents across Mason County and it’s clear they are ready for new leadership in our district – they don’t believe voices from the past can take us where we need to be to have a strong future,” Shutty said. “People are concerned about moving backward when unemployment is still above 8 percent, wages aren’t going up and people are struggling to find housing. I’ll bring a new voice to the commission to help solve these issues and bring people together.”

Shutty points to his campaign kickoff, held earlier this month in Union, to show he has deep support running across the county and party lines.

“My campaign has support from Democrats, Republicans and Independents from all walks of life in Mason County. While they might not identify with my party, they identify with my vision for a stronger economy, safer neighborhoods and expanding opportunity for every resident. As commissioner, I will help make Mason County a leader regionally and a competitor across the state,” said Shutty.
